Celebrate the Official Signing Ceremony for Philly's WPS Team

Monday, May 18th, 2009

The Franklin Institute

Philadelphia WPS invites you as our special guest to join us on May 18th at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to celebrate the official signing   ceremony of YOUR team.

Philadelphia WPS 2010, Philly's own women's professional soccer team has scheduled a ceremony for its official signing and unveiling of the team's name and colors. This special community event will be Monday, May 18th, 6:00pm at Philadelphia's historic Franklin Institute. Area media correspondents, Philadelphia area dignitaries/VIP's, and soccer enthusiasts of all ages are invited to participate in this celebration.

Philadelphia's new women's professional soccer team, the eighth franchise in Womens Professional Soccer, is led by David Halstead and Matthew Driver, who will also serve as the team's head coach. The team will begin league play in the Spring of 2010. "We are excited to bring women's professional soccer back to the city and the surrounding communities of Philadelphia and to join the other WPS teams in world-class play," said team President and CEO Halstead.  General Manager and Coach Driver added, "To be a part of this team, and this city's great sports history and soccer passion is an honor. We are committed to building a franchise that is the model sports organization and the envy of the League. These distinctions will be earned from our level of play on the pitch, our support for our community, and the results we deliver to our fans and partners."

Also scheduled to attend the event is WPS Commissioner, Tonya Antonucci.    "It's a testament to the framework that we have put in place that new investment groups and passionate owners are excited about the opportunity to be a part of this league and help WPS grow in the coming years and beyond," said Antonucci, who just last month celebrated the kick off of the WPS inaugural season in Los Angeles.

Womens Professional Soccer - First Matches

I'd like to get a group together to see the first home matches of the two local (sort of) WPS teams.  Philly gets it's own team in 2010, but until then we have to travel a little bit to see the top pros play.  If interested, submit this Webform.

On Sunday, April 5 at 4pm, Sky Blue is hosting the Los Angeles Sol.  We have a match at UGH Fury at 12, so there is enough time to head up to this match afterward.  Sky Blue will be playing most of their home matches at Rutgers University, but the first two will be played at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater NJ.  Sky Blue features USA National Players Natasha Kai, Heather O'Reilly, Christie Rampone, and Kacey White, Brasil Nationals Ester and Rosana, Canada National Kelly Parker, Australia Nationals Collette McCallum and Sarah Walsh, England National Anita Asante and China National Ouying Zhang.  Their opponent, Los Angeles Sol, is headlined by Brasil National and 3 time FIFA Player of the Year Marta.  They also feature USA Nationals Shannon Boxx, Stephanie Cox, Aly Wagner and Christie Welsh.

On Saturday, April 11 at 6pm, Washington Freedom is hosting Chicago Red Stars.  This match will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel.  Washington features USA National Team players Joanna Lohman, Brianna Scurry, Abby Wambach, and Kat Whitehill, French Nationals Sonia Bompastor and Luisa Necib, Australia National Lisa DeVanna, Canada National Erin McLeod, Norwegian National Lene Mykjaland and Japan National Homare Sawa.  Chicago Red Stars features Brasil National Cristiane and USA Nationals Carli Lloyd, Kate Markgraf, and Lindsay Tarpley.

USA vs Ireland - Sept 13, 2008 at the Linc

This is the first stop on the U.S. Women's National Team's 2008 Fall Tour, celebrating their run in China this month. The USA takes on Ireland at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 pm.

Ticket Prices will be:  $22 Goal Lines; $30 Corners; $40 Side Lines; $55 Midfield; $75 Club Seats (Philadelphia only); $150 On-Field Seats (Philadelphia only) and $150 Front Row Seats (New York only). All prices do not include convenience and handling charges (which are added through Ticketmaster).

We're going to get group tickets - email Tom by September 1 how many you would like.

There will be a rematch on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 pm at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
